Should you measure humidity before buying a dehumidifier?

The short answer

Usually yes, if the problem is not obvious. A week of readings with a basic hygrometer tells you whether you need a dehumidifier, how big the problem is and what level to aim for. If you already see condensation inside, smell mustiness or can't dry laundry, you can choose a model now and use readings to set it.

When measuring first makes sense

  • The air feels heavy, but there is no condensation, smell or visible damp.
  • You are deciding between a 10 L and a 20 L class unit and don't know how humid the room really gets.
  • The problem seems to come and go with the weather, cooking or showers.

How to take a useful reading

  1. Place the hygrometer at about chest height, away from AC vents, windows, the kitchen and bathroom doors.
  2. Give it an hour to settle before the first reading.
  3. Note humidity and temperature each morning and evening for 5 to 7 days.
  4. Write down anything unusual: rain, guests, laundry drying, AC switched off.

What your readings suggest

General guidance, not a diagnosis. Dubai Municipality guidance recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, and Stadler Form suggests 50–55% for most UAE homes.

When a reading is not enough

If there is a leak, recent water damage or visible mold, fix or assess the source first. A dehumidifier lowers humidity in the air; it does not stop water coming in or remove mold that is already growing. Our indoor air quality team at HawaQ offers humidity monitoring and mold testing if you want a professional assessment.
