When to use a dehumidifier in Dubai: by season, time of day and situation
The short answer
In Dubai, run a dehumidifier whenever a room stays above 60% humidity. That is most days from June to September, when outdoor dew points peak, plus overnight in closed bedrooms and wardrobes for much of the year, while you are travelling, and after rain, leaks, showers or indoor laundry. Set it to 50–55% and let it switch itself on and off.
The simple rule
Turn it on when a room’s humidity stays above 60%, and let it hold the room at 50–55%. Dubai Municipality guidance recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, and below 50% where possible. Everything else in this guide is about when that is most likely to happen.
When to use a dehumidifier in Dubai, by season
Dubai’s dew point, the best measure of how much water is in the air, climbs from around 10 °C in January to about 27 °C in August. See the full table in why UAE homes are so humid. Here is what that means for running a dehumidifier:
| Season | What the air is doing | How to run your dehumidifier |
|---|---|---|
| June to September (peak) | Outdoor dew points around 24–27 °C. Moist air leaks in all day and condenses on AC-cooled surfaces. | Run it every day, set to 50–55%. Use a drain hose so it never stops on a full tank. |
| April–May and October–November | Humidity rising or falling. Closed rooms and waterfront homes stay damp. | Run it in bedrooms, wardrobes and closed rooms, especially overnight when the AC cycles. |
| December to March (cooler months) | Lower dew points, but windows are opened more and rain can arrive suddenly. | Run it after rain, in wardrobes and storage, and whenever a room reads above 60%. |
The best time of day to run it
- Overnight. Bedrooms are closed, people breathe out moisture for hours, and the AC cycles off once the room is cool. This is when humidity creeps up and sheets start to feel sticky. A quiet unit with a night mode is ideal.
- Early morning. If windows and AC vents drip at sunrise, the dehumidifier is not running long enough overnight.
- After showers and cooking. Run it for an hour or two afterwards in nearby rooms.
- While the AC is off. Humidity rises fastest when the AC stops, so this is when a dehumidifier earns its keep.
Situations that call for a dehumidifier
- While you travel. Homes left closed in summer go musty quickly. Leave the dehumidifier on with a drain hose so it runs the whole time.
- After rain or a leak. Dry the room fast, within 24–48 hours, to stop mold. See after rain or a leak.
- Drying laundry indoors. Wet clothes add a lot of water to a small room. Laundry mode dries them faster.
- Waterfront homes. Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, JBR, La Mer and Bluewaters homes get humid air every time a balcony door opens. See waterfront homes.
- Wardrobes, dressing rooms and storage. Closed spaces with no airflow are where musty smells start.
- Basements, maid’s rooms and laundry rooms. Often the dampest rooms in a villa.
Signs it is time to switch one on
- Condensation on windows, mirrors or AC vents
- A musty smell in wardrobes, closed rooms or on clothes
- Dark spots in corners, on grout or behind furniture
- Sheets, sofas or towels that feel damp
- Laundry that takes a long time to dry
- A hygrometer reading above 60% that does not come down

When you can switch it off
When a room stays between 40% and 60% on its own, you do not need to run it. In practice the humidistat does this for you: set 50–55% and the compressor stops once the room is there. Running a dehumidifier below about 40% is not needed in UAE homes and can make skin and eyes feel dry.
The best settings through the year
- Humidity target: 50–55%.
- Mode: automatic or smart humidity, rather than continuous.
- Night: night or sleep mode in bedrooms.
- Away: drain hose connected, so it never stops on a full tank.
- Doors and windows: closed in the room it is drying.
- With AC: run both. Many people can set the AC a little warmer once the air is drier. See dehumidifiers and AC.

Frequently asked questions
When should I use a dehumidifier in Dubai?
Whenever a room stays above 60% humidity. In Dubai that is most days from June to September, plus overnight in closed rooms and wardrobes for much of the year, while you travel, and after rain, leaks or indoor laundry.
Should I run a dehumidifier all day in Dubai?
Leave it on with a humidity target of 50–55% and let it switch itself on and off. In peak summer it may run much of the day. In cooler months it will run far less.
Is it better to run a dehumidifier at night?
Yes, in bedrooms. Humidity rises overnight when rooms are closed and the AC cycles off. Use a quiet unit with a night mode.
Do I need a dehumidifier in winter in the UAE?
Less often. Dew points are low from December to March, but run one after rain, in wardrobes and storage, and in any room that reads above 60%.
Should I leave a dehumidifier on while travelling?
Yes, especially in summer. Connect a drain hose so it keeps running, set it to 50–55%, and keep doors and windows closed.
What humidity should I set my dehumidifier to in Dubai?
50–55% for most homes. Dubai Municipality guidance recommends below 60%, and below 50% where possible.
